Jars of Clay.

1 12 2009

The speaker came out onto the stage. He pulled out a one-hundred dollar bill.

“Who would like this one-hundred dollar bill?” he asked.

Hands shot up all around the room.

Then he crumpled the paper, threw it on the floor and ground the dirt into it with his foot.  Holding up the dirty, crumpled and tattered money, he then asked, “Now, who wants this one-hundred dollar bill?”

The same hands went into the air.

“And that is why God still wants you,” he continued. “You may be battered and bruised. You may be tattered and torn. You may be crumpled and creased but that does not change your value to God any more than what I have done changes the value of this one-hundred dollar bill.  You are still precious and valuable to the God who chose you, redeemed you, and loves you as His own.”

“He knows how we are formed; he remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14). God understands that we are fatally flawed creatures, yet deems us immeasurably valuable no matter how crumpled and soiled we are.

Excerpt from today’s devotion of Girlfriends in God.

What better way to describe God’s amazing grace and wonderful love for us :)

Really thank God for guiding me thru these 3 weeks of mugging, for all the strength, support and energy that He has granted me.

One last paper in 3 hrs’ time and I’m all set for FREEDOM.

… the internSHIP!!
Haha yeahhhh finally, on my last hols I’m getting an internship :) Coz there’s no more holiday plans to interrupt my 1 mth break… Which was wad happened during my May break :(
It’s alright, coz this internship is sth more closely related to the field I wanna explore when I grad :)
Initial plan was to start on 7th, but I proposed to go in 2 days earlier to make up for my 2 days absence due to mission trip.
So I’ll be startg on 3rd dec, 1 day aft exams.. The awesome thing is… I get to go to work at 2pm on the 1st day (which means I might NOT have to cancel clubbing plan the night b4 :P )
I was half expecting that I won’t get paid for the internship coz there was no mention of allowance (actually I dun mind coz I really wanted the exp), but turns out they are paying $700/mth :)
Only draw back is that the internship will probly last only 2-3 weeks coz the counsellor I’ll be attached to is gng on leave aft dat :(
Whatever it is, I hope that I can gain the experience I’m looking for and hone my relational skills w ppl :)
Excited!! :D
** dear Lord, thank you for the wonderful opportunity and your timely providence. Amen!

I am Autism.

11 11 2009

Are YOU listening?

There was a controversy over how the video portrayed the autistic community.

It sounded rather derogating and bleak at the start, but I believe it speaks of alot of the challenges that families with an autistic member are going through.

But once it get past the mid-way mark of the video, it sounded so empowering.

The controversy is over whether the video should portray autistic people as “burden” to their family, but I believe what the video truly wants to get across is the idea of love and support that is essential for the well-being and continued development of an autistic individual.

We fight with LOVE :)

So Long H.M.~!!

3 09 2009

Finally done with H.M.’s case study presentation…

Quite an overdose on memory disorders, forgetting and amnesia…

But we really learnt quite alot abt HM and other amnesic patients along the research..

Alot of cool things!

One of which is the one and only audio recording of H.M.’s voice:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7584970

And also a video of a typical day for Clive Wearing, another famous amnesic patient:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDNDRDJy-vo

Another exciting thing was looking at the REAL copy of DSM-IV. Wooohooo! Feels awesome just holding it and walking ard the library w it… :D

So my nxt presentation is in the final 2 weeks of dis sem, I have alot of other things to worry abt 1st..

Like my pile of readings to be completed b4 the test and the 2 term papers.

Argh.

Awakenings

28 08 2009

We watched a film today for Neuropsych’s lecture.

Awakenings.

I’ve heard about this show but I never really know wad it was abt, until today.

It is based on a book by this neurologist name Oliver Sacks and the story is based on his experience in a chronic hospital located in Bronx.

There, he worked with patients that survived an epidermic of encephalitis lethargica but are staying alive only in catatonic states of non-movements, likened to someone in a long sleep or one who is physically present but is not alive beyond his physical self.

Dr Sayer (the fictitious representation of Sacks) used L-Dopa, a drug for Parkinson’s patients, for his own grp of patients and they had a dramatic episode of awakening. It was like coming back to life, only to realise that the world has passed you by for 20, 30 or even 40 years.

But the drug brought abt side effects like catatonic excitement, where the patients went into fits of hyperactivity like shaking of head or trembling of hands. We read abt these side effects in the text, but actually seeing the fear and frustration it causes the patients is another story.

The grp of patients eventully went back to their catatonic states of immobility. They encountered brief periods of awakenings, but never as great as the one before….

It is not the best show to watch on a rainy afternoon because the starting is slow, the story is really sad and the plot leaves u hanging at the end….

But I loved it.

It shows the importance of having:

- a devoted doctor who genuinely wants to help his patients recover

- support, care and empathy from their caretakers

- people who believe that they can get well

and also that there is no perfect drugs (or as they call it, a simple miracle).

And they had awesome actors to boot.

Robbin Williams as Dr Sayer and Robert de Niro as Leonard Lowe (the 1st patient that Sayer gave L-Dopa to).

**Did I mention that I’m a real sucker for Robbin Williams movies? Well Iam! :)

File:Awakenings.jpg

**I hope I get to read the other book by Sacks when I’m free…  like  “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat”. Like when I’m actually FREE and when they actually HAVE the book in the library…

H.M.

25 08 2009

I’ve read so much abt H.M., I really wished that I could meet him in person… Didn’t know he passed away last year :(
